Our CNN New Business team is looking for a Director, Software Engineering to lead engineering and build out new teams to support our work. The New Businesses team will be leading the creation of new, standalone products at CNN, focused on creating separate, non-news experiences that can help enrich our users' lives and drive the subscription business.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a technology leader passionate about user-first product development, in-market pilot programs, and iterative product development. You'll play a key role in ensuring our New Business team develops reusable frameworks for fast and effective pilot programs, supports user research and experimentation, and quickly hires and scales multiple engineering teams to support various programs.
Your Role & Accountabilities...
Technical Leadership:

• Lead architecture and implementation of core tools and integrations supporting in-market DTC products
• Champion the evolution of reusable frameworks for user research and quick in-market experimentation and pilots
• Partner cross-functionally with Engineering leaders to align New Business engineering with platform offerings
• Engage in high-level roadmap planning, feature prioritization, and cross-functional delivery updates to ensure alignment across CNN
• Develop and implement scaling plans for successful pilot programs
  Team Management & Mentorship:
  
  • Lead, mentor, and grow multiple teams of software engineers and managers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and ownership
  • Champion engineering excellence through best practices, high-quality code standards, and efficient developer workflows
  • Oversee architectural design reviews and maintain active involvement in code quality through hands-on review contributions
    Collaboration & Communication:
    
    • Collaborate with CNN product, program, and design teams to evaluate technical feasibility, enhance developer experience, and deliver innovative experiences
    • Partner with Engineering leadership across CNN and WBD to drive technology strategy, identify consolidation opportunities, and promote cross-team knowledge sharing
      Qualifications & Essentials...
      
      • Proven experience (10+ years) in software engineering leadership, with some experience in media or DTC products
      • Strong experience (3+ years) managing and scaling high-performance engineering teams, focusing on mentorship, team development, and inclusive culture
      • Extensive experience in modern web and mobile application architecture, emphasizing cross-platform frontend development, UI/UX practices, and frameworks
      • Experience in server architecture, cloud computing (AWS), backend services design, and content management systems
      • Proficient in programming languages including Node.js, Go, JavaScript, and other relevant languages
        
        • Hands-on experience with DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment strategies for web, mobile, and connected TV platforms
        • Experience in forming and scaling engineering teams for multiple parallel product efforts
        • Excellent communication, leadership, and team-building skills to align engineering initiatives with product and business goals

          • Experience in news, media, or content-driven digital tech with understanding of fast-paced editorial environments
          • Innovation experience in zero-to-one product development, startups, or environments where time-to-market is critical
